Beginning with a record six medals while graduating from the military college, he has served the armed forces in various capacities for over 41 years: the last as Director-General. In 2019 he was awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) by the President of India to recognize his distinguished service of an exceptional order. At 58 years of age, he became the world’s only General to complete the Ironman Triathlon – 3.8 km of swimming, 180.2 km of cycling, and 42.2 km of running – within 17 hours. And the very next year, he broke his own record by 41 minutes. He is fond of reading, riding, badminton, cycling, squash and music.
